My brain has an incredible capacity to remember dates. Sometimes, it’s a useful skill: I tend to be remember birthdays, even for people I barely know. If you’ve ever mentioned your birthday, it’s more than likely sitting in my mental parking lot, waiting to be recalled.
However, sometimes this date-driven memory is less useful: Because my brain and nervous system are inseparable, mental memory becomes body memory, and echos from experiences on certain days tend to reverberate through my being in subsequent years.
Today would have been my father’s 72nd birthday. And on this day 17 years ago, I graduated from high school. Last year, I was in Las Vegas begging the memory care facility not to kick my father out for being a total asshat. Seventeen years ago, I played human foosball before going on a non-booze cruise in San Diego Harbor for Grad Night. The reverberation of last year is overpowering that of 2008, so I started wondering if making some kind of positive memory today could leave a stronger imprint for the memory echos moving forward.
To that end: Want to help me save lives?
Shoe4Africa is an incredible organization that is building the first pediatric cancer hospital in sub-Saharan Africa (where 9 in 10 children diagnosed with cancer die without access to treatment). For the NYC Marathon in November, I’m again raising funds to aid in this hospital’s development.
